Follow these 10 tips to boost your poker performance & profits. While geared to beginner players, there's poker tips that even seasoned pros should remind themselves of once in a while.

1. Don't Play Every Hand / Do Fold More
<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=gamesite-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B000I3EKR8&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">Probably the number one mistake beginning poker players make is that they play far too many hands. When you're just starting out playing poker, you want to play poker, and that means staying in hands that aren't very good just to be part of the action. But playing more doesn't mean winning more, it usually means losing more. If you find you're staying in half or more the hands you're dealt, you need to upgrade your starting hand requirements.
Sponsored Links
Poker Table Dining Table
Solid Wood Dining Top Plus a Bonus Poker Top! Don't Play Drunk
<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=gamesite-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B0002ZYDZG&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">Countless nights have I sat across a table from someone & watched them get plastered silly and throw away their entire stack of chips. I've been that person too - and there are nights where you're just playing with friends for low stakes and it's more about the fun than the poker - but if you're in a casino, watch the alcohol. The truth is, while you may be more relaxed after 2 drinks, it may lead to you playing looser and less sharply, even if one's not 'drunk.'
Related: Vote: Should Poker Players be Allowed to Drink at Tournaments?
3. Don't Bluff Just For Bluffing's Sake
A lot of beginner's understand that bluffing is a part of poker, but not exactly how. There's is NO rule that one must bluff a certain amount or at all during a poker game, but many players don't feel like they've won unless they've tried a poker bluff. Bluffs only work in certain situations & against certain people, and if you know a player always calls to the showdown, it is literally impossible to bluff that player. It's better never to bluff than to bluff "just to bluff."

Learn more about bluffing dos and don'ts
4. Don't Stay in a Hand Just Because You're Already In It
<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=gamesite-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B0008FU19M&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">Another common mistake beginners make is to think that "Well, I've already put that much in the pot, I have to stay in now." Nope. You can't win a pot just by throwing money at it. There may be cases when pot odds warrant a call, but if you're sure you're beaten, and there's no way your hand can improve to be the best hand, you should fold right away. The money you've already put in the pot isn't yours anymore, and you can't get it back just by playing a hand all the way to the end.
5. Don't Call at the End of a Hand to "Keep Someone Honest"
This one follows the last tip. I see a lot of players look at another player's final bet, look at the hand, & say "I know you've got me, but I have to keep you honest," as they throw in a final call. It may be worth it to see if a player really has the hand if you're not sure & you're gaining information that will help you later on, but if you really feel a player has the hand he's representing & you're beat, why give him another pile of your money? Those bets will add up over an evening.
6. Don't Play When Mad, Sad, or in a Generally Bad Mood
<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=gamesite-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=0984082298&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">When you play poker, you shouldn't do it to escape from being depressed or having a really bad day. You start out on tilt -- playing emotionally, not rationally -- and you won't play your best. Likewise, if during a poker game, you lose a big hand or get sucked out on and feel yourself going on tilt, stand up & take a break until you feel calm later on. Fellow players will sense your mood & take advantage of it.
7. Do Pay Attention to the Cards on the Table
When you first start playing, it's enough just to remember how to play and pay attention to your own hand. But once you've got that down, it's incredibly important to look at what's going on at the table. In Texas Hold'em, figure out what the best possible hand would be to fit the flop. Make sure you notice flush & straight possibilities. In 7-card stud, pay attention to what's showing & what people have folded when you consider calling opponents.
8. Do Pay Attention to the Other Players
As you play, one of the single best things you can do is observe your opponents, even when you're not in a hand. If you know if one player always raises in a certain position, & another has a poker tell when he bluffs, & a 3rd folds to every re-raise, you can use that information to help you decide how to play against them. Once you know that player 3 always folds to a re-raise on a river, that's when you can bluff & steal a pot.

Learn more about reading poker tells
9. Don't Play at too High Limits
There are many reasons people move up to a higher limit game than they usually play. Good reasons like they've been winning consistently at a lower lever & are ready to move up, & bad reasons like the line is shorter for higher limits or you want to impress someone. Don't play at stakes that make you think about the actual money in terms of day-to-day life or with money you can't lose. Even if you had one super-good night at $2/4, resist the urge to play $5/10. The next tip explains more why.
10. Do Pick the Right Game for Your Skill Level & Bankroll
One of the reasons you shouldn't jump into a $5/10 game after winning a huge bunch of money at $2/4 is because as the stakes rise, so does the average skill level of the players sitting there. You want to be one of the best at the table, not the fish who sits down with sharks. If you're making stacks of money at a lower level game, why move? You're winning stacks of money. The swings up & down at higher limits are much bigger, and one big night's win won't last long at a high-stakes game.

Make "Money" Playing Texas Holdem Sit-n-Go!

Texas Holdem is fun! Or is it?
So you wanna be a big time poker star! I am not one, but I have figured out a way to make a profit in 9-player Sit-n-Go tournaments! By "profit" I mean leaving the table with more money than you paid to enter the game! To do this consistently requires patience. Impatient players do not win at poker consistently. If you are willing to spend a lot more time folding than playing, you can leave the table in 3rd place or better more often than not! Only 3rd or better is required to make a profit on your buy-in and have made your time worth it.

Sit-n-Go Payout Rules
On Zynga Poker, which is available to users of social networking sites such as Facebook, Sit-n-Go tournaments start with nine players. The 3rd place player wins 20% of the total buy-in, 2nd place 30% and 1st place 50%. No "real money" is paid out by Zynga Poker, so it's a good place to practice and not risk your rent payment! (Which I would not suggest you do anyway!) Other sites have the same rules for 9-Player rooms, but they also have six and four player rooms with different pay-out rules. The methods I describe here are strictly for 9-Player Texas Holdem Sit-n-Go games and DO NOT apply to Shootouts or other poker games!

How to "not play" to win!
I'll assume you already know basically how Texas Holdem works. In Zynga Poker, the starting dealer is always to the left of the very bottom center seat. The first person in the room will take that seat, of course. Get the seat you can closest to the right of the dealer. You want a lot of hands to go by before you have to pay blinds and play at all!

Fold like you just washed a weeks worth of laundry!

Fold every hand you do not have to put money into! Especially when a game first starts, you do not want to waste your calls on the idiots that are going to go all-in or raise a lot before any cards ever show on the table! It's tempting to bet a lot when you have a pair or a couple of face cards, but save your coins! Right now your goal is not to loose more than trying to win! Keep folding the hands you can until all the idiots weed themselves out and leave the table! The only time you will call a LOW bet is if you have a really good starting hand and the bets are still low. When the first three cards come on the table and don't help your hand, then fold!

Remember, we just want to at least make it to 3rd place! You won't do that risking your coins when you don't have to! Be patient and let the eager players beat themselves off the table!

Check please!

Eventually you will have to pay blinds, since you're still in because you finished folding all your laundry! On your large blind, check if no else has raised. You're already out the coins to pay the blind and checking is always free! If you have a good hand and no one raised a lot, go ahead and call. If some one bet a lot or went all-in then fold. If you stay in and still don't have a good hand after the first three cards come on the table fold! We're still trying to make it to 3rd place, so stay protective of your coins!

Last Call (and raise)!

Here is when you will prudently stay in a hand. After you have done everything above and you find yourself holding a good, winnable hand after the first three cards have come down, stay in! Hopefully you have a good three of a kind, a full house, a flush or a straight. A high two of a kind may be worth staying in for. One pair is a fold.. Have a good hand already there before you continue to stay in! Do not depend on one of the last two cards making your hand!! The chances are slim!

Poker Pitfalls To Avoid!
The biggest pitfalls to poker players are impatience and over-confidence. When you play very defensively like I do, you will fold more than play. Keep these tips in mind for any poker game:

Never go all-in just because you were dealt two aces! I've seen a lot of people go all-in holding two aces or other high cards. Two aces is still just ONE PAIR and will do nothing for you if a guy holding a 6 and a 9 gets a full house after all the cards are down!

Don't keep putting money into a losing hand! Maybe you stayed in and called when you should've folded.. If you see you're not likely to win, FOLD! Staying with a bad hand just cost you more coins.

Don't second guess yourself! You WILL see you have folded hands that you would've won had you stayed in. The chances of the wining cards coming down for you were slim and you made the right choice.. You'll get it back!

Don't get angry! Bad beats and mouthy players can cause you to make poor decisicions. Don't let it get to you! This is suppose to be fun, right?

Remember it is a game of chance! And although it is a game of chance, some commen sense and keeping in mind the odds can give you a better winning percentage! Still, don't take a bad loss hard!

NEVER GAMBLE YOUR BILL MONEY! If you try out a "real money" poker site, please only use recreational income to play poker! NEVER depend on winning at gambling for needed income!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://enjoyingpoker.blogspot.com/2010/04/make-money-playing-texas-holdem-sit-n.html' title='Make "Money" by Jinsen D
Making money at poker is all about having that edge over the other players.By mastering all the math part and the psychological things that go along with poker you will be able to make more money than players that do not calculate pot odds at all for example. The more knowledge you can use against your opponents the greater your edge will be.

Learn all the basics of poker, always remember that a hand's value changes according to position along with all the basic strategy

Always play limits according to your bankroll size and never play your entire bankroll as any pro will tell you, once again it's all about having the edge and making profit over the long run,so you want to last awhile, you will not last long playing with half or your entire bankroll.A good rule when playing tournaments is to have fifty buy ins,so if you have fifty dollars you would only be able to afford 1$ tournaments,it might seem like a small amount but this is what matters, you play amounts that do not effect you so you are not influenced to make bad decisions.

I suggest you get a program that displays your estimated pot odds on your hands if you play online poker,it saves a headache.Poker pros are always doing math when they play poker, they wonder how much can they win versus the chances of winning, how likely their opponents are to be bluffing, what they think their opponent has...They think many many things are there is quite frankly a never ending knowledge bank to poker, however poker math and basic strategy can be mastered rather easily, the psychology part never ends.

In a nut shell, you want to read your opponents and not overbet your bankroll and make sure you are making mathematically correct decisions in your play.

-Odds and outs

Poker has a whole lot to do with odds and outs, pot odds and outs are a bit complex to understand and there is many different kind of odds when it comes to poker.Pot odds are the chances to win in relevance with how much there is in the pot ,outs are the number of cards that can help you, then there is implied odds like how likely your opponent is bluffing or made the better hand and if you will actually win if you do make your hand.

As you can see there is much to know about poker, and it's just best to learn what other players are not using. Not many low limit players calculate pot odds for example, this gives you an edge.Usually the better players are the ones with the most poker knowledge and experience.

100% Deposit Bonus

Double Your Money Just for Signing Up
<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=gamesite-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=0446698601&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">Full Tilt Poker is endorsed by the biggest pros, so it only makes sense that we would offer the biggest sign-up bonus.
